Elm City Market: New Haven, CT   Write a Review

[Co-ops & Grocery Stores] Updated: 2012-08-22
Many New Haveners have to travel outside the city to purchase groceries; many other local residents, lacking the means to travel outside the city, must go without key staples and affordable fresh healthy food. New Haven is a food town to the core. Yet the city that invented the hamburger, perfected the pizza, and boasts the densest downtown in Connecticut currently has no full-service grocery store. In late 2009 a group of property owners and concerned citizens came together to fix this problem. We have been working tirelessly to develop an independent, member-owned grocery store that will serve the unique needs of New Haven. As a hybrid co-op that provides local, natural, organic, and conventional products and groceries, Elm City market will reflect the needs of the community in a way that no national chain could in order to provide the sustenance that New Haven needs now. Everyone, both members and non-members alike, will be welcome to shop at the market. However, as a food co-op, we can’t exist without our members. By joining us today, you’ll be able to play a critical role in the development of New Haven’s food co-op.

New Leaf Market: Tallahassee, FL   Write a Review

[Co-ops & Grocery Stores] Updated: 2012-08-22
New Leaf market has been serving Tallahassee, Florida for 38 years. Since starting out as a very small buying club it has changed its name once, re-located twice and grown from 200 owners to 10,000. After completing a modest expansion and renovation in 2002, it was readily apparent that the store still needed more room. In November of 2008, a massive expansion and renovation was completed that increased the store by 50 percent. The new store now offers wider aisles, more registers and expanded product selection. In addition to organic produce and natural and organic groceries, New Leaf market opened its first all-natural meat and seafood department. A new specialty department includes an expansive selection of wines, imported and domestic microbrews and gourmet cheeses. The re-designed deli offers made-to-order sandwiches, smoothies, fresh juices, espresso drinks and a grab ‘n go items. The hot and cold bar offers hot breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a salad bar. Eat healthy. Buy local. Build community.

Maple City Market: Goshen, IN   Write a Review

[Co-ops & Grocery Stores] Updated: 2012-08-23
Maple City market’s story begins in the early ’70s when faculty and students from Goshen College, along with other community members, began a buying club. In 1976 the buying club moved to Jefferson Street into an old car garage. It continued to function mostly as a buying club, until five years later when the buying club opened a storefront. The location was still small, but allowed for gradual improvements and additions. Over the years our co-op has expanded and moved, and Maple City market continues to be a viable, growing cooperative, responding to a strong, supportive membership. Our mission is to provide high quality, healthful food and other products with a focus on economic and environmental sustainability. Our fresh baked breads and grab-and-go deli soups and sandwiches are a favorite. Customers love our fair trade coffee, tea, chocolate, and sugar. And our fresh, locally grown produce keeps people coming back for more!

The Common Market: Frederick, MD   Write a Review

[Co-ops & Grocery Stores] Updated: 2012-08-23
The Common market is a cooperative grocery store that has been serving natural foods to the Frederick community since 1974. Our co-op has grown tremendously over the years and opened the doors to a full-service store in May of 2006. Our spacious store is a great one-stop-shop for all of the items on your natural foods grocery list. Or drop in for delicious food from our cafe and enjoy it in our sunny indoor dining area or the outside patio. Our staff strives to create a unique, educational and interactive shopping experience for all. We carry out that commitment by offering customers a variety of workshops in our Co-op Community Room. We hold events that range from chocolate tasting to workshops on whole foods. Our activities reach beyond the walls of the store; we also reach out to our community with a variety of events including an Earth Day Event in our local community park. At The Common market we believe in maintaining a fresh, high quality range of fairly-priced products that promote customer health and wellness, environmental and social sustainability, and localized economy. Our buyers use these criteria when seeking out products for our diverse customer base. We offer many standard brand name natural foods, but enhance that selection with a wide variety of local goods in all departments, and a variety of foods for special diet needs. We welcome opportunities to meet people in our area, so please contact us or stop in for a visit.
